Lets face it, if you’re a cat owner you hate cleaning litter boxes.  The time, the smell and mess – it’s just not enjoyable.  Well folks, I have found something that takes the pain out of cleaning my kittie’s litter box: the littermaid .

It is a simple yet highly effective answer to cleaning up after your kitty, it works by using a sensor that detects when your kitty leaves the box after doing his business, the sensor activates a comb that sweeps across the littermaid and collects the clumped piles of kitty poo but leaves the clean litter in place. The piles are then swept into a bin for easy collection and disposal.

If the bar can’t complete it’s sweep, it will return to it’s start position and try again. It will retry up to 10 times, and then quit with a flashing red light to alert you to the fact that it needs attention. All in all, the littermaid is an excellent system, your kitty will always have a clean litter box to do his thing, and all the stinky mess is stored away and out of sight (and smell!).

The littermaid comes in a few different models, there are both single and multiple cat models available so you can pick the right size based on how many kitties you have!

One thing to be aware of when using your littermaid is the amount of litter use, be careful not to put too much litter in the box. If this happens it can impede on the comb’s ability to sweep through little and move the clumps out, if this happens the comb will reset to it’s start position. The litter maid can also be a little noisy so if it does get stuck in a loop trying to free itself it can be a little annoying to listen to.

The littermaid is reasonably price for the time and effort it will save you, the smaller single cat model goes for just over $100 while the top of the line “elite” model can be purchased for around $200 – if you can spare it, it is a worthwhile investment.

Once you put the littermaid in place your cat should adapt to the new litter box quite quickly. Like anything new they’ll need to check it out for themselves and get acquainted with it – you should remove the old litter box from sight so the cat is forced to use the new littermaid when the time comes.

Personally, I think the littermaid is a great improvement over the traditional litter box, it offers a win-win for both owner and cat as you will be relieved of the hassle and odor associated with routinely cleaning a traditional litter box and your cat will have clean, smooth litter surface to do their business – this reviewer (and his kitty Rex) highly recommend the littermaid!
